Why Germany pays by bank, not by card

Germany is one of the world’s most fully banked and digitally connected payment markets, yet its instrument mix looks unlike almost anywhere else. Digital payment adoption reaches 99.5% of adults (2021) and account ownership 98.3% (2024), so the plumbing is universal. The striking contrast is on the card side: 94.8% of adults hold a debit card (2024) — overwhelmingly the domestic girocard scheme — while only 56.5% hold a credit card (2021).

That gap is the most important fact for checkout design in Germany. A German shopper’s default is account-based money: bank transfer, direct debit and invoice (Rechnung / Kauf auf Rechnung) have long outsold credit cards online, and cash kept a cultural grip at the point of sale long after other rich markets abandoned it. Credit cards are present and accepted, but they are not the automatic choice, and treating Germany as a card-first market leaves conversion on the table. With internet adoption at 93.5% (2024), connectivity is no constraint — preference is. For how gateways and acquirers fit together, see what payment gateways are and how they differ.

How the gateway layer is structured

Full-stack PSPs — Stripe, Adyen, Mollie, PayPal, Klarna and the German specialists Unzer, Computop and Novalnet — dominate merchant onboarding, bundling gateway, processing and acquiring. What separates a well-integrated checkout from a poorly converting one is the local method mix.

girocard is the domestic debit scheme, run by the German Banking Industry Committee (Deutsche Kreditwirtschaft) and the default card in shops. Most girocards are now co-badged with Visa Debit or Mastercard Debit, which is how they work online; at the physical point of sale, girocard remains the reference rail — see the payment gateways & POS category.

SEPA Direct Debit (Lastschrift) is the backbone of recurring and utility-style billing: pull-based, bank-account-based, with its own mandate lifecycle. Any PSP aiming at subscriptions or recurring billing in Germany must handle it properly.

Invoice and installments are the historical German specialty. Klarna is the dominant provider of Kauf auf Rechnung and buy-now-pay-later at German checkouts; local BNPL options (easyCredit, RatePay, Riverty) fill the rest. Omitting it is the classic way to lose German orders — shoppers expect to receive goods before paying.

Sofortüberweisung — the bank-transfer method that once competed with girocard online — is now part of Klarna’s Pay Now pay-by-bank product; German consumers still see the Sofortüberweisung name in the flow.

One scheme is gone: giropay, the banks’ own online payment method, was wound down at the end of 2024 — giropay.de now redirects to girocard.eu. Its successor is Wero, the European Payments Initiative wallet built on SEPA instant payments, launched for German e-commerce from late 2025 and already offered by Mollie, Unzer and Computop. Treat giropay as retired; Wero is the emerging account-to-account option.

Crypto acceptance in Germany is legal and now sits inside a fully defined EU-wide framework: the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, which applies directly in Germany. The stablecoin rules — authorisation and supervision of asset-referenced token (ART) and e-money token (EMT) issuers, the category most payment stablecoins fall into — became applicable on 30 June 2024. The rest of the regime, including the authorisation requirement for crypto-asset service providers (CASPs), became applicable on 30 December 2024, with a transitional period for providers already operating that runs until 1 July 2026 (Article 143).

Germany’s national regulator is BaFin: it grants MiCAR authorisation to CASPs, publishes authorised firms in its company database and ESMA’s interim MiCA register, and applies the national Cryptomarkets Supervision Act (KMAG) alongside the EU regulation. Crucially, MiCA carries an EU passport: an authorised CASP in any member state may serve German customers after a notification — no separate German authorisation needed.

The practical takeaway for merchants: choose a gateway that can evidence its CASP authorisation or grandfathering position. MiCA-regulated stablecoins are the cleanest way to do crypto checkout, since their issuance now sits inside the e-money regime. Sources & method

Provider and regulatory facts on this page are cited to primary sources: each provider’s own documentation (Stripe’s availability page, Adyen’s Germany guide, Mollie’s method catalogue, Klarna’s site and press releases, Unzer, Computop, Novalnet), EUR-Lex for the MiCA regulation, BaFin’s MiCAR pages and the European Payments Initiative for Wero. The giropay shutdown is cited to Handelsblatt and corroborated by the defunct giropay.de domain. These facts change often; re-verify provider eligibility and supervisory status before any integration decision.

Every statistic is drawn verbatim from the FinStatGlobe derived dataset for Germany — World Bank Global Findex and World Development Indicators — and links to the statistic page carrying its full time series, source citation and data year. Data years differ by indicator: account ownership, debit cards and internet adoption are 2024 observations, while digital payment adoption and credit card ownership were last measured in 2021. Remittance inflows were $21.2 billion in 2024. Germany has no mobile-money or online-purchase figures in our dataset, so those topics are not covered. We never restate an observed value as a current-year figure.

FinStatGlobe publishes no statistics on payment gateways, POS terminals or crypto adoption, because no verified open cross-country dataset covers them. Those categories are editorial-only, and no figure is ever invented to fill the gap. See the methodology page and the payment gateways hub.
