Account ownership reaches 99% of adults (2024) and digital payment adoption stands at 90.8% (2021). Those two figures set the ceiling on what any checkout can reach in Lithuania: a gateway can only collect from people who already have an account and a habit of paying digitally.

The card mix is lopsided. Debit card ownership is 93.1% (2024) against just 11.9% for credit cards (2021). A checkout designed around credit-card behaviour — installments, rewards, deferred billing — is optimising for a small minority here, while debit and bank-transfer methods carry the volume. Our explainer on why account ownership does not guarantee card access covers this gap.

Internet use covers 89.2% of the population (2024), which sets the practical ceiling on online checkout reach.

How the gateway layer is structured

Card acceptance plus local bank transfer is the practical baseline in Lithuania. Because no verified open dataset catalogues this layer, treat provider claims about local method coverage as something to test in a sandbox rather than assume.

As an EU/EEA market, Lithuania inherits the single-market payments framework: SEPA credit transfer and direct debit, SEPA Instant, and strong customer authentication under PSD2. Settlement is in the euro. That standardisation means most pan-European PSPs can serve Lithuania without a bespoke local integration — the differentiator becomes which national methods they support natively.

The Payment Gateways & POS category is editorial-only on this site: no verified open cross-country dataset measures gateways or POS terminals, so we publish no statistics for that layer. Compare other markets on the payment gateways hub.

Crypto: MiCA, with an EU-wide passport

Lithuania regulates crypto through the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), Regulation (EU) 2023/1114, rather than a purely national regime. Stablecoin rules for asset-referenced and e-money tokens applied from 30 June 2024, and the crypto-asset service provider (CASP) authorisation regime from 30 December 2024.

Two consequences matter commercially. First, authorisation is granted nationally — in Lithuania by Bank of Lithuania — but passports across the EU/EEA, so a CASP authorised in any member state can serve Lithuania on a notification basis rather than seeking fresh authorisation. Second, the provider question becomes concrete and answerable: ask which entity holds the MiCA authorisation and in which member state.

Because MiCA harmonises the rules, the crypto acceptance question in Lithuania is less about legality and more about whether your chosen provider is authorised and whether stablecoin settlement is commercially better than the SEPA instant rail it competes with.

Where crypto has the clearest commercial opening is cross-border. Remittance inflows were $1.1 billion (2024), and stablecoin settlement competes against the cost and speed of those existing channels rather than against domestic cards. See how crypto payment gateways work for the custody, conversion and settlement mechanics.

Our Cryptocurrency & Blockchain category is editorial-only: no verified open cross-country dataset measures crypto ownership or payment volume, so we publish no crypto statistics and never estimate one.

Sources & method

Provider and regulatory facts on this page are cited to primary sources — the providers’ own availability pages and, where a legal instrument is named, the regulator’s or legislature’s own text. These change frequently: provider eligibility, licensing status and product scope all move, so each statement reflects the cited source at the time of writing and should be re-verified before an integration decision.

Every statistic is drawn verbatim from the FinStatGlobe derived dataset for Lithuania — World Bank Global Findex and World Development Indicators — and links to the statistic page carrying its full time series, source citation and data year. Observations here carry data years 2021, 2024; each figure states its own year and we never restate an observed value as a current-year figure. The full topic list is on the Lithuania country page.

FinStatGlobe publishes no statistics on payment gateways, POS terminals or crypto adoption, because no verified open cross-country dataset covers them. Those categories are editorial-only, and no figure is ever invented to fill the gap. See the methodology page.
